They rush through the gates
Shelter, food, and safety away from all the hate
I stand with a white coat
Needle in hand
I am frozen by the words being said

Crawling out of the dark cave where I tend to hide
I hear noises
I see light
I force myself to open my eyes
She wanted to fly
But the atmospheric pressure was too high
She wrapped herself in helium balloons
But the gas escaped them too soon
She wanted to fly
But her dreams were crushed by some physics guy
And her biology failed her every time she tried
She decided to transform
A bird in the sky, free to roam
So the next time you see a bird fly
It might just be her mocking that physics guy
Not poetry but she’s my new family member. I’m a first time mom now
I question it
I do not know
If it’s not the truth
I should let it go
The dead trees cried to me once
It is cold here
Help me—too big to have a shelter, too attached to my roots to move
The cold winters took away my loyal leaves
Left me with naked branches, lonely
Cover me…help me
But I didn’t hear them; I was too cold to pay attention
